Must have accessories and lenses for Canon EOS R7 and EOS R10

Continuing with their foray into premium APS-C segment, Canon has given us the R7 and R10 in year 2022. These are premium offerings packed with features only seen in professional level cameras. Crop sensor makes it more attractive price wise and is more appealing to the semi professional photographer.

About the R7 & R10

Canon released the DSLR camera EOS 7D was back in 2009. It remained in production for the next five years which the longest for any camera. That is when Canon realised the potential of premium crop sensor cameras for the photography enthusiasts. It is still around for approx ₹ 60,000 but has been discontinued by Canon. The successor Canon EOS 7D Mark II released in 2014 met with even greater success and is still in production. It was designated as a professional DSLR camera. Priced at ₹ 1,15,000 with a kit lens, it is quite affordable being a crop sensor camera packed with pro level features.

The R7 & R10 are the mirrorless successors to 7D. With the introduction of the new mirrorless R series cameras, Canon has also sorted out the long pending issue of two lens mount for the DSLR cameras. The full frame versions had EF mount while the crop sensor variants had the EF-S mount. But now the complete R series mirrorless range has the newly developed RF mount. This is another game changer for Canon as the complete range of EF and EF-S lenses can now be used on all R series mirrorless cameras with an adapter.

Bag and Battery

R7 and R10 are both tiny. Best suited for outdoors and street photography. However the small size comes with a compromise, battery life. Bag is the next essential accessory but I won’t be making any suggestions here.

Fluid ball head

You all guys must probably having a tripod. Along with that another must have accessory is the fluid video head. As the name sounds, it is for video and to get those amazing butter smooth flows and transition when you move the camera. It is also an important accessory for still photography. The more expensive version is of Manfrotto which will cost around ₹ 10,000. Less expensive variant is from the brand Digitek, however there are some quality issues as seen in the Amazon reviews.

Check out the Manfrotto version here.

Adapter with a drop in ND filter

Canon does has a drop in ND filter but it is crazily priced at ₹ 50,000 and. it has flaws in design which come out in the final pictures. The better version is the Meike MK-EFTR-C drop-in Filter Mount Adapter. It enables the complete range of Canon EF and EF-S lenses to be fitted on all EOS R series mirrorless cameras like EOS R, RP, R5, R6, R7 and R10. This must have accessory performs dual role both as a filter and adapter.

Why do you need an ND filter. Well shooting in bright daylight with the sun tends to over expose pictures. That means a lot of post processing of photos. Even when the sun is not out, harsh artificial lights will mess up your indoor pics. If a photographer wants to capture motion blur of a waterfall in daylight. It will become impossible to capture the image at 10 second because it will allow so much light to come in. ND filter cuts out the amount of light entering the camera.

While using a wide aperture when you want a shallow depth of field, will allow a lot of light to come in. This will also cause over exposure. Shallow depth of view is need in pictures where you want the foreground and background to be in focus. ND filter in such situation is a must.

Motion blur can be created in almost any kind of photography like landscapes, cityscapes, monuments, crowds, night lights and so on.
